EMI made this decision based on the fact that this paper reported a less studied area of avian influenza viruses: neurological infection, and certain novel genomic features of the virus and host factors.
The second place award winner is “Alarming situation of emerging H5 and H7 avian influenza and effective control strategies” by Jianzhong Shi, Xianying Zeng, Pengfei Cui, Cheng Yan & Hualan Chen (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/22221751.2022.2155072)
This invited review by Prof Hualan Chen and other colleagues summarized the global outbreaks of H5 and H7 influenza viruses to animals before more unusual infections reported in North America in 2024. It received high numbers of downloads and many citations.
There are two winners of the third place award, the first is “Rational development of multicomponent mRNA vaccine candidates against mpox” by Rong-Rong Zhang, Zheng-Jian Wang, Yi-Long Zhu, Wei Tang, Chao Zhou, Suo-Qun Zhao, Mei Wu, Tao Ming, Yong-Qiang Deng, Qi Chen, Ning-Yi Jin, Qing Ye, Xiao Li & Cheng-Feng Qin (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/22221751.2023.2192815)
This is a timely paper describing the design of an mRNA vaccine against monkeypox infection by including multiple immunogens.
The other winner for the third place award is “African swine fever virus – variants on the rise” by Jan H. Forth, Sten Calvelage, Melina Fischer, Jan Hellert, Julia Sehl-Ewert, Hanna Roszyk, Paul Deutschmann, Adam Reichold, Martin Lange, Hans-Hermann Thulke, Carola Sauter-Louis, Dirk Höper, Svitlana Mandyhra, Maryna Sapachova, Martin Beer & Sandra Blome (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/22221751.2022.2146537).
EMI finds that the study reported the discovery of more variants of African Swine Fever Virus while the world has been working hard to contain the spread of this virus.
Congratulations for the winners of 2023 best paper awards and EMI is looking forward to seeing more high-quality papers in the next year.
